AN expert in the habits of bees will explain to visitors to a garden centre why the insects are vital to growing plants.

George Newton from British Beekeepers’ Association (BBKA) will be the guest speaker at the Crowland Outlet Garden Centre next month as part of a free event dedicated to the insects.

He will be at the centre on June 9 and June 10.

Manager Sanjay Bowry said: “Mr Newton will bring with him a special observation hive to give people the chance to see a working colony of bees in action.

“He will be on hand to chat to customers about the important role bees play in nature and gardening. Visitors will also be able to buy a range of locally produced honey.

“People will be able to learn more about how bees make honey and the benefits bees have on the garden, the environment and the economy.

“It is estimated that bees contribute £191million to UK agriculture annually through the pollination of crops.”

She said the event tied in with the centre’s Bees, Bugs and Butterflies Festival, which takes place from June 4 until July 1.
