Factfile on the Dairy Crest site
The site in Midland Road was a distribution centre for Dairy Crest until about three- and- ahalf years ago. It has frequently been in the news since its closure. It was targeted by arsonists twice in March 2010, while neighbouring building The Old Bakery, which is also derelict, was torched as well. In November 2010, 50 firefighters battled a blaze which tore through the building. In April 2011, concern was raised over a large amount of flytipped rubbish which had been dumped on the site. Of the 90 homes proposed for the site, some 30 per cent will be affordable. The development would be served by a new access off Midland Road, with the existing entrances to the site closed. Also included with the proposal is a new area of public space, some 1,250 square metres, where it is intended play equipment for children will be installed.
