Mum urges parents to ensure children have eye checks
A Peterborough mum has urged parents to ensure their children have regular eye tests after her son was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Leanne Kemp gave the warning after her son, Taylor, was diagnosedwiththeeyedisease last year.
Taylor, now three and a half, has had to have lengthy treatment to correct the condition andsave his sight.
Leanne, from New Engl and, said: “Taylor was a normal, happy, healthy boy until October. He went to preschool, and they phoned and said he was not himself. His eye had gone all red.
“We thought it was an infection, but they took a scan, and it was revealed to be cancer, and a type only about 50 children a year get.”
Leanne said while the tumour is now under control, it could be ‘re-ignited,’ and Taylor was also at risk of other tumours.
She said: “If wehadtakena photo of Taylor with a flash it might have shown up.
“I would urge parents to make sure they get their children’s eyes tested if they have any concern.”
Leannesaidsincethenews had broken, the community had rallied round to help.
Her partner, Shaun Kemp, is well knownfromworkingat Kemps Fruit and Veg in Fletton.
Acharitycycleridewascarried out at the weekend, with Peter Smith riding 250 miles from Windsor to Peterborough to raise money to help.
Leanne said: “We can’t thank people enoughfor their support. The money will help take the pressure off from the mortgage and bills, as well as providing sensory equipment for Taylor.”
