Free­man wins with a su­perb 205lb catch

The race to win a place in the £1,000 Grand Fi­nal at Rook­ery Wa­ters later this month is hot­ting up.

In Satur­day’s qualifier on the Mag­pie Lake those tak­ing part had a fan­tas­tic match with 14 weights over 100lb recorded.

Win­ner with a stun­ning 217lb 11oz was city rod Steve Free­man from peg 17.

Run­ner-up was Tony Daw­son from peg 34 with 205 lb and Gavin But­ler was third on 194lb 8oz.

In the Thurs­day qual­i­fy­ing open on the same pool Gra­ham Welt on con­tin­ued his ex­cel­lent run of form win­ning with 128lb 6oz.

Sec­ond was Kevin Shel­lie with 106lb fol­lowed by Vinny Easy on 102lb 14oz.

OVER 60s

In the Wed­nes­day Over 60s open on Jay Lake, Ram­sey stal­wart Keith Ray­ment took a com­fort­able vic­tory with 149lb 2oz fol­lowed by Ray Pull­man (111lb 2oz) and Pete Hol­land (97lb 10oz).


An­other lo­cal rod in fine form is Mac Camp­bell of Fenland Rods.

On Sun­day he drew the fan­cied golden peg 15 at Frasers, Ely, and com­fort­ably won the match with a level 85lb taken on the pole with meat and mag­got.

Run­ner-up was Tony Nes­bitt (48lb8oz) and third Paul Smith (44lb 4oz).
