‘Never again!’ says Cooper af­ter gru­elling ul­tra-marathon

Peter­bor­ough Triathlon Club (PACTRAC) mem­ber Giles Cooper took part in a gru­elling ul­tra-marathon at the week­end.

He tack­led the Dixons Car­phone Race to the Stones 100km (62.5 miles) event from Ox­ford to S win­don, which apart from the long dis­tance also in­cor­po­rated 1700 m of climb­ing.

Giles com­pleted the course in 13:17:47 which earned him 137 th place out of 956 com­peti­tors and 11 th po­si­tion in his age group.

He said: “My prob­lems were all nu­tri­tional. I man­aged just two gels in the first half of the race. There­after I got through on Coke and some fan­tas­tic sup­port from the mar­shals and other com­peti­tors. But never again!”

PACTRAC’s Jon Crow­ley fin­ished sev­enth over­all and third in his age group in the sprint race (swim 750 me­tres, bike 13.5 miles, run 3 miles) at the Cam­bridge Triathlon. He fin­ished in 1:12:20.

Four other PACT RAC­ers com­pete din the stan­dard dis­tance race( swim 1500 me­tres, bike 27 miles, run 6.25 miles) with two - Steve Hope and Sue Davys - win­ning their re­spec­tive age groups.

Re­sults: 29th Steve Hope 2:35:52 (age group 1st); 30th Char­lie Brookes 2:36:22 (age group 7th); 65th Gary Shoe­make 2:46:23 (age group 16th); 102nd Sue Davys 3:04:14 (age group 1st).
