When I was a young cub reporter one of the things guar­an­teed to get you a clip round the ear ( in my day lit­er­ally, now it would be a vir­tual one) is to de­scribe a crim­i­nal as ‘dar­ing’.

“War heroes are dar­ing, crim­i­nals are the scum of the earth,’’ was the re­frain from the gnarled old sub ed­i­tor clutch­ing his brown pa­per bag con­tain­ing a can of ex­tra strength cider.

Even so, it’s a temp­ta­tion that’s hard to re­sist when you get a raid like the one on the jewellers in Queens­gate last week .

Mind you I still live in hope of that story where a gar­dener stops a raid on an al­lot­ment, spots the thieves’ car reg, writes it in the soil with a trowel be­fore dig­ging it over be­fore the cops get there. The in­tro will go some­thing like this : Quick­think­ing, green-fin­gered have-a-g0-hero left red­faced.
