Stam­ford carry the lo­cal flag into round two

Stam­ford AFC are the only lo­cal sur­vivors in the FA Cup.

The Daniels claimed a su­perb4-1 first qual­i­fy­ing re­play win over higher-level St Neots at the Zee co Sta­dium on Tues­day night.

The teams had drawn 1-1 at St Neots at the week­end.

Daniels boss Gra­han Drury said: “We dom­i­nated a team from a higher league for a game and a half.

“The ef­fort and the de­sire couldn’t be faulted and some of our foot­ball was of a good qual­ity.”

Je­vani Brown, who also scored in the first game, Sam Mul­ready, Tom Batch­e­lor and Jor­dan Smith scored Stam­ford’s goals in the re­play.

They now travel to fel­low Evo Stik Divi­sion One South side Gres­ley in the sec­ond qual­i­fy­ing round on Septem­ber 17.

Three more wins and Stam­ford will be in the first round proper.

Gres­ley won 6-2 at Deep­ing Rangers in the first qual­i­fy­ing round on Satur­day and there were also de­feats for lo­cal teams Peter­bor­ough Sports, Ho lb each United and Spald­ing United at the hands of higher level op­po­nents.

Avelino Vieira shot Sports into the lead against Stour­bridge, but the classy vis­i­tors ran out 3-1 win­ners, whileHol­beach went down to a late free kick at Dere­ham. Jake Clitheroe scored the Tigers’ goal.

Spald­ing lost 3-2 at Mick­leover Sports with Brad Wells and Nathan Stain field the men on tar­get.

“We’re dis­ap­pointed as we didn’t do our­selves jus­tice,” Spald­ing boss Dave Freck­ling­ton ad­mit­ted.

“We con­ceded a cou­ple of bad goals at bad times in the game.”

Tom Batch­e­lor was among the scor­ers for Stam­ford AFC against St Neots.
