The question of the extra spend needed on a road project to expand Fletton Parkway is complex. The scheme which, has some government funding, is in the main paid for by the city council. The council has a ‘contingency fund’ to cover situations like this. But in this case the eye-watering £5.1 million of local taxpayers’ cash will put a huge hole in that fund. That’s a lot of contingency that could have gone to other schemes. It may be difficult to predict but it wouldn’t take many ‘unpredictable’ problems like this to leave a local authority with a terrible financial headache.
