Hotel claims are misleading
I’m writing in response to your recent article entitled “Government hits back at ‘misleading’ claims over £1m Peterborough City Council hotel bill for homeless families ”- which I had to read twice!
Why? Well, firstly, I couldn’t believe the Torycontrolled city council were planning on doing a deal with estate agents Stef and Philips
Ltd who’ve bought 74 properties from a “private provider” at St Michael’s Gate off Keys Park, Parnwell, with the plan being to remove the present tenants, so the local authority can use the properties to then put homeless people in.
And secondly, because the Tories plan to spend £1.2 million on putting homeless families in T rave lodges!
What an absolute failure and disgusting stance by the Conservative controlled City Council in Peterborough!
Homelessness has increased 60 percent in our city since 2012, and since the Tories took control of the City Council in 2000, I’ve never seen anything of substance from them to address the issue seriously!
In fact, I’m remindedofthe way they forced the organisation St Theresa’s (who supported homeless people in the city) out of their venue in Manor House Street in 2009, something I campaigned on at the time.
At the time St Theresa’s received £19,000 per annum from the council – less than it costs to run the Mayor’s car during that period!
Liberal Democrats have recently called for the Conservative Government to provide an additional £60 million to be spent on tackling the soaring rates of homelessness in the UK. This forms part of the party’s comprehensive plan to tackle the root causes of homelessness.
The charity Shelter has previously said: “Most people are only three pay packets away from homelessness” and with this in mind, I would strongly call upon people to contact their local councillors via www.writetothem. com and demand they take the issue of homelessness in Peterborough seriously!
