The Peterborough Evening Telegraph
Time to ignore the doomsayers
No-one can say that it’s been a boring year for politics so far! We’ve had High Court challenges, opposition party mutiny attempts, Theresa May outdoing the weak Jeremy Corbyn at every given opportunity, and democracy-deniers such as the leader of the Libdems (Timsomething- or-other) naively calling for second referendums. And we’ve not even made it out of March yet!
Our government is working wonders to reverse the damage caused by the ghost of Labour’s past.
Unemployment is dramatically falling. Wages are increasing. Our national deficit is finally being addressed with a responsible, forwardthinking approach (whilst Labour seek to plunge us into ever more debt), and our economy continues to grow from strength to strength. There has never been a better time, nor more reason provided, to vote Conservative.
Last week in this section of the PT, Lisa Forbes irresponsibly claimed that demographics are being ‘turned against each other’ and claimed that our government is acting in a divisive manner (quite rich coming from a representative of the most divided party in British politics).
Forbes also made an attempt to demonise our Conservative MP, Stewart Jackson; an MP whom the people of Peterborough have consecutively chosen to represent them over her party since 2005, and who has a proven track record of working tirelessly for his constituents and for the betterment of our City.
Her statements were as intentionally misleading as they were ridiculous. False claims such as hers are the very things which create the illusion of division that the failed Labour candidate and her party wish to use as a desperate means of ‘blackmailing’ votes from the general public (who deep down have no interest in voting for them).
It’s an undisputable fact of life that elements of bitterness and disappointment will always exist amongst the losing side of any argument, and the aftermath of the referendum showed no deviation from this.
Yet it is certainly revealing that - whilst the likes of the Labour Party and the Lib Dems are actively seeking to create unrest (e.g. pitting those who voted remain in the referendum against those who voted leave) - it is only the Conservative Party that reaches out to every member of society, and that selflessly presses forward with a positive message. This message is one of confidence, of determination, of optimism, but most of all, it is one of unity.
In this exciting turning point in British history, we need to unite now, more than ever.
So, the next time you read any unfounded, self-serving claims by Lisa Forbes, or anyone else who seeks to frustrate the will of the people, stop and think for a second who really seeks to divide the people of the United Kingdom to fit their own political agenda and to frustrate, exploit and exaggerate any feelings of upset caused by the referendum (more often than not to the detriment of our great country).
On June 23 rd 2016, the people of Peterborough voted to leave the European Union.
Brexit provides an opportunity for us to be part of a forward-thinking, global Britain, and that opportunity isn’t just for those who voted leave or for those of any particular demographic.
This is an opportunity for each and every one of us; leavers, remainers, for people of all races, religions, and from all walks of life, to come together, to move forward, and to embrace the positive changes and benefits that a conservative government is working hard to ensure.
Ignore the doomsayers. Exciting times lie ahead.
