Used bikes help those in need
Britain’s biggest bike retailer is collecting second-hand bikes at selected stores across the country, helping to divert landfill waste and change lives.
Many of the children’s bikes donated go to prison cycle facilities Halfords has set up, where offenders are taught new skills to repair the bikes, the aim being to provide them with improved opportunities on release.
The chosen stores include Halfords’ outlet in Mallory Road, in Boongate.
The re-conditioned and fully checked bikes are then donated, along with new helmets, to disadvantaged schools across the UK. Other suitable bikes are donated to the company’s charity partner Re~Cycle who teach people in Africa how to repair and maintain the cycles, providing employment and improving lives in a sustainable way. We have been working with partners for a number of years now.
So far, with the help of lo- cal communities, we have diverted over 450 tonnes from landfill with over 30,000 bikes changing the lives of 180,000 people.
Donated bikes will transform the future for both people here in the UK and abroad and this is an exciting example of where recycling can make a real difference. The bikes we receive through donations really do make a huge difference. They allow for life
changing transport opportu- nities in rural communities, as well as benefitting existing programmes in education, health and homelessness.
We couldn’t donate as many bikes as we do without the support of Halfords and their drop-off locations. They provide a vital logistical network across the UK so people in all regions can support Re~Cycle by donating their unwanted bikes. All bikes that are in a reasonable condition
will be accepted provided they are complete with no cracks in the frame and less than 25 per cent rust. FULLY FITTED FROM ONLY inc. valve, balance & tyre disposal
