Title fancies Deeping have set themselves high standards
Football - Yaxley scrape through in FA Cup
It’s only one game and we’re still in early August, but Deeping Rangers laid down a United Counties Premier Division marker with a terrific performance against Wisbech Town in their first league match on Tuesday night.
Goals from Scott Coupland and Dan Schiavi sealed a deserved win for Michael Goode’s men who hope to go one better than last season’s second placed finish.
It was a big step up from Deeping’s opening competitive performance of the season, a 3-2 win in the extra preliminary round of the FA Cup at Peterborough Northern Star.
“We’ve set ourselves a very high standard now,” Goode enthused. “We were outstanding all over the pitch.”
Schiavi, Johhny Clay and Brad Hocking scored against Star for whom Zak Munton and Jezz Goldson-Williams replied.
Deeping now hit the road to take on Wellingborough Whitworth, who beat Star 5-0 on Tuesday, on Saturday and then Yaxley next Tuesday (August 15).
Yaxley scrambled through an FA Cup tie against Division One side Raunds this week, winning a replay 4-2 thanks to two extra-time goals from Dan Cotton.
The Cuckoos failed to convert two penalties in normal time with Jack Saunders and Phil Stebbing the guilty men.
The teams had drawn 1-1 at Raunds on Saturday.
“There were good and bad things about our performance,” stated Cuckoos boss Brett Whaley. “But the result was the main thing. I was impressed with Raunds though. I’d expect them to have a very good season.”
Yaxley’s reward is a preliminary round tie at home to fellow UCL Premier Division side Harborough Town.
Deeping have a tougher looking tie at Evo Stik Central League side Barton Rovers, while Wisbech have a cup cracker at home to Spalding United.
The ties will be played on Saturday, August 19, although Stamford AFC’s attractive tie at Cambridge City will be played on the evening before.
FA Cup preliminary round draw: (Friday, August 18) Cambridge City v Stamford AFC. (August 19) Barton Rovers v Deeping Rangers, Eynesbury v Peterborough Sports, Holbeach United v ON Chenecks, Wisbech Town v Spalding United, Yaxley v Harborough.
