Pilgrims make no progress against fast starters Posh
It took the Plymouth team bus 14 hours to get to Peterborough on the eve of this match, but it took their players just four minutes to fall behind.
A cross from Leo Da Silva Lopes careered into the Plymouth net off the back of visiting defender Gary Sawyer to indicate to the Pilgrims it might not be their day.
Confirmation arrived with a second goal from Junior Morias two minutes after the re-start and by a string of fine saves from debutant Posh keeper Jonathan Bond that ensured Grant McCann was the happier of the two managers at the end.
Actually that’s not much of a claim as Plymouth boss Derek Adams was seen raging during the game and after it at a perceived set of injustices.
Most notably, according to Adams, Morias’ goal should have been strangled at birth by a foul by Jack Marriott who knocked huge visiting defender Sonny Bradley tothegroundwiththemerest of contacts before squaring for his strike partner.
Mind you as Adams reckoned his side were ‘brilliant’ and ‘annihilated Posh’ his opinion can be taken with the preverbial pinch of salt.
Bond did make cracking saves in each half to keep out Joel Grant and Jake Jervis, but Plymouth ‘keeper Luke McCormick was also excellent after the break to deny Michael Doughty and Marriott, both of whom were set up by Marcus Maddison who came alive for just those 10 minutes of a tough contest.
Maddison still managed to dominate the post-match headlines as he made allegations of spitting against an unnamed opponent (on Twitter, rather ill-advisedly) who was presumably fed up with seeing the Posh star rolling around on the ground after very tackle, foul or otherwise.
Posh were playing their best football of the match at 2-0 up before a breakaway goal for Plymouth substitute Gregg Wylde ensured a nervy final 15 minutes.
But captain Jack Baldwin and his fellow centre-backs Ryan Tafazolli and Steve Taylor remained strong even though their wing-backs clearly preferred attacking to defending.
Both goalkeepers made cracking saves.
Junior Morias scores the second Posh goal.
