Art on grand scale could add soul to brickwork

The artist Pablo Picasso said: “The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.” The designs created for huge areas of wall space on Peterborough buildings featured on pages 2&3 in this week’s paper might not be to everyone’s taste. Personally, I like the design for coloured glass on Crescent Bridge but maintaining such an installation might prove more problematic than actually creating it. The project by arts group Paper Rhino will culminate in a meeting in November to look at the ideas. There are no immediate plans to take any of them forward but let’s hope this project doesn’t end just at the design stage. The concept should not be dismissed, it’s a great idea... vast areas of plain brick like that on the TK Maxx building are somewhat soul destroying and crying out for a creative treatment that will give them, and all of us, a bit of a lift.
