‘SNP needs to work with Westminster’

The Press and Journal (Aberdeen) - - NEWS -

The SNP needs to work with the UK Government to get Brexit-ready, Scottish Secretary David Mundell has urged.

Mr Mundell said he wanted to be focused on “outcome, not process” and called for an end to political point scoring over the issue.

He said: “We’ve made substantial progress in recent weeks in terms of discussing what should happen with powers coming back from Brussels and with UK frameworks.

“Now is not the time for conjuring constitutional grievances. Now is the time for working together, constructively, as the people of Scotland expect from their two governments.

“It is time, too, for the Scottish Government to lift their eyes above and beyond the Brexit process and consider future opportunities.”

International Trade Secretary Liam Fox has claimed he can replicate the 40 EU existing free trade agreements on Brexit day.

Now, Mr Mundell has said Scotland must also start looking outwards at trade deals.

He highlighted his recent trip to Argentina to talk to its whisky and oil sectors.

SNP Westminster economy spokeswoman Kirsty Blackman MP said: “Instead of attempting to issue ludicrous decrees from on high, David Mundell should be pledging that he and other Scottish Tory MPs will stand up for Scotland’s interests when it comes to Brexit. Those MPs should be putting country before party by voting to protect Scotland’s place in the single market.“The SNP has already laid out ambitious plans for the year ahead – it’s about time David Mundell did the same.”
