Artist opens degree show – decades after dropping out

The Press and Journal (Aberdeen) - - FEATURES -

An artist who dropped out of art school in the 1960s is exhibiting in Ullapool after finally completing her degree.

Rosanne Wiseman, 66, of Aultbea, was invited to showcase her work as part of An Talla Solais member’s exhibition.

This is her degree show as she completes her studies with the Open College of the Arts for a BA (Hons) in painting.

The distance learning course provided the ideal opportunity for her to revisit and continue her studies part-time while being in full-time employment.

She has produced a collection of mixed media paintings reflecting her love of colour and texture inspired by the sea shore.

Ms Wiseman said: “The exhibition is all to do with the sea shore, but it is an abstract interpretation of looking into rock pools and the surrounding rocks, as well as the surface of the water and the depths of the pools.

“I went to Glasgow School of Art and dropped out in the second year. I met someone, got married, and the rest was bringing up children. I never had the time to paint.

“Doing a distance learning course was the only way I could have done it, as I also had to work as a cook and housekeeper. I am retired now, it is great, I have got plenty of time and I paint all the time.”

Living by the sea has provided plenty of subject matter and inspiration. Working from initial sketches and photographs, she has interpreted the scattering of pebbles on the pool bed and their enhanced colour under water.

The surface, with shapes of reflected light, has been described in collage, paint and applied fabrics.

Ms Wiseman has taken the process a step further by producing a series of small collages using melted wax and heated plastics.

Some of the work as well as cards will be for sale.

She has lived in Aultbea for nearly 50 years and has attended various creative short courses and workshops, some of which have been in Ullapool with An Talla Solais and Bridgehouse Art. As a member of An Talla Solais, she has often exhibited in the members’ shows.

Her work can be seen in The Room at An Talla Solais, Ullapool Visual Arts, Argyle Street, until October 22. The exhibition is open daily from 10am-5pm, and entry is free.
