More railway investment needed
SIR, – As a regular visitor to Inverness and Speyside, I use the Glasgow-Inverness line frequently going forward to Keith and Elgin as I need to. We need much more investment in these routes through to Aberdeen.
Glasgow-Perth has benefited from the improvements at Queen Street. The journey through to Perth is greatly improved. Northbound to Inverness there is too much single track, which restricts route development. The ageing HST fleet, which will have a limited time frame to turn the passenger business round, still have performance edge to clip some time off longer distance journeys. We still need more track and higher track speeds.
From Aberdeen to Inverness, we also need more double tracks. Imagine these powerful machines waiting more than 10 minutes to enter a single track section. How embarrassing. There is unlikely to be double tracks under Union Street in Aberdeen due to limited clearance for two trains. Does this mean that there is sufficient headroom for a single line with overhead wires allowing through electrics to Inverurie at least?
