‘UK bill should be half EU estimate’
The UK’s “divorce bill” on leaving the EU should be no more than £26billion, a free-market think tank has calculated.
European Commission president JeanClaude Juncker has said the financial settlement could see the UK billed for £50billion, while unconfirmed reports have suggested EU officials believe the total could reach £100billion.
The sums cover commitments to EU budgets up to 2020.
But the Institute for Economic Affairs said that the “upper limit” for any payment should be £21billion along with around £5billion for pensions and other one-off items.
