“Attacks may represent a growing trend”

A man has been arrested following an alleged stabbing in Aberdeen.

Police were called to the scene of the incident on Shiprow, close to Vue Cinema and the NCP car park, just after noon yesterday.

A 30-year-old man was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary after the incident with serious injuries, which were not thought to be lifethreatening.

A spokesman for the ambulance service confirmed that a woman was also treated at the scene for injuries.

Yesterday, Shiprow was cordoned off for a number of hours following the alleged attack, while officers carried out their investigations.

A floor of the nearby car park was also cordoned off by police officers.

A bloodied black jacket could be seen close to the entrance of Vue.

Last night, police confirmed a 33-year-old was detained following the alleged assault, which is understood to have involved a knife.

Inspector Chis Kerr said: “This has been a contained incident and we are not looking to trace anyone else in connection with our inquiries. If anyone who witnessed the incident, or knows anything about it hasn’t yet spoken to officers, I would ask they call police on 101.”

Yesterday’s assault fol- lows another alleged attack in Aberdeen on Monday afternoon, when a man in his 30s was seriously injured on Sinclair Road.

North-east MSP Tom Mason said: “First, our thoughts must be with the family and friends of the individuals affected in these incidents, and our communities should come together to support them.

“Secondly, however, we must all be extremely worried that the attacks may represent a growing trend that is blighting the streets of Aberdeen. Today, I have written to Chief Superintendent Campbell Thomson, Police Scotland Divisional Commander for the north-east, expressing my grave concern at these developments.

“I have asked what action Police Scotland are taking in our communities to combat this violence, and also for the most recent violent crime statistics for the Aberdeen area to establish whether or not this is part of a growing trend.”
