Town in funding setback
Plans to build a £1.6million community centre in aHighland town have been dealt a severe blow after its earmarked major funder turned the project down because it did not tackle social deprivation enough.
The centre in Dornoch in Sutherland had been in the pipeline for several years and was just about to reach fruition. But it is believed the Big Lottery Fund changed its funding criteria after the initial application for £970,000 was made.
The newfund emphasised such targets as tackling social deprivation and inequality.
In addition, the fund for thewholeof Scotland is believed to have had only £5million left in it for the period July to this April – and just £14million for the next financial year. Scheme mover, Dornoch and District Community Association, said it was disappointed but had not given up the fight.
