Death of Ex­or­cist au­thor aged 89

Writer Stephen King has led tributes to the au­thor of The Ex­or­cist, Wil­liam Peter Blatty, who has died aged 89.

Blatty’s widow, Julie, said he died in hospi­tal in the US state of Mary­land from a form of blood cancer called mul­tip l e my el o m a on Thurs­day. Hor­ror au­thor King wrote onTwit­ter: “RIP Wil­liam Peter Blatty, who wrote the great hor­ror novel of our time. So long, Old Bill.”

Film critic Mark Ker­mode, a prom­i­nent Ex­or­cist fan, posted a pic­ture of Blatty along with the fi­nal line from the novel: “In for­get­ting, they were try­ing to re­mem­ber.”

Blatty was a for­mer Je­suit school vale­dic­to­rian.
