MPs de­mand Brexit plan by mid-Fe­bru­ary

The Com­mons Brexit com­mit­tee has told theUKGovern­ment it should pub­lish its plan for leav­ing the EU by mid-Fe­bru­ary at the lat­est.

Its first re­port said this must set out the po­si­tions on mem­ber­ship of the sin­gle mar­ket and cus­toms union.

It also called for an out­line frame­work on the UK’s fu­ture trad­ing re­la­tion­ship with the EU as part of the Ar­ti­cle 50 ne­go­ti­a­tions – and a com­mit­ment that the UK Par­lia­ment will have a vote on the fi­nal treaty.

A UK Gov­ern­ment spokes­woman said it would ap­proach the with­drawal talks with the “full in­ten­tion of se­cur­ing a deal that de­liv­ers the best pos­si­ble out­come for the UK”. She added: “We want a smooth and or­derly exit from the EU, and­will look at the best way to de­liver that.

“We’ve also said we will set out our plans, sub­ject to not un­der­min­ing the UK ne­go­ti­at­ing po­si­tion, by the end ofMarch and that par­lia­ment will be ap­pro­pri­ately en­gaged through­out the process of exit, abid­ing by all con­sti­tu­tional and le­gal obli­ga­tions that ap­ply.”

Scot­tish Brexit Min­is­ter Mike Rus­sell said he hoped Theresa May would pro­vide more in­sight in her speech next week. He added: “Brexit is the sin­gle big­gest threat to Scot­land’s econ­omy so it is ab­so­lutely vi­tal thatwe have clar­ity on our fu­ture re­la­tion­ship.”
