Nut­tall pulls out of de­bate

Ukip leader Paul Nut­tall has pulled out of a by­elec­tion hus­tings after fac­ing calls to re­sign as an MEP over in­ac­cu­rate claims that he lost close friends in the Hills­bor­ough dis­as­ter.

Or­gan­is­ers of the event ahead of the Stoke by- elec­tion say they were told Mr Nut­tall would not be at­tend­ing about an hour be­fore it be­gan.

It fol­lows a de­ci­sion to take his web­site off-line for “sched­uled main­te­nance”.

The Ukip leader has apol­o­gised over claims – car­ried on the web­site for six years– thathe lost close friends atHills­bor­ough, which he ad­mit­ted was wrong in a live ra­dio in­ter­view.

He still in­sists he was at Hills­bor­ough when tragedy struck in 1989.
