Re­think needed on taxi fares in­crease

SIR, – I write con­cern­ing the pro­posed fare in­crease for taxis in High­land Re­gion.

I have been a taxi driver and op­er­a­tor in Lochaber for over 20 years and have seen many fare in­creases over the years but this lat­est pro­posal of a 28% in­crease is to­tally un­ac­cept­able. It may suit the driv­ers in the city but it will be the death knell for those in the more ru­ral ar­eas. I would also point out that many op­er­a­tors do school con­tracts. The coun­cil re­newed these con­tracts for five years be­fore Christ­mas with a start­ing date as Jan­uary 2017. Less than a month later the same coun­cil puts an in­crease of 28% on fares and these peo­ple are un­able to ben­e­fit. Could I
