May to divert focus to Brexit

- BY RICHARD WHEELER

Theresa May will attempt to put the focus back on Brexit after a weekend wobble in the polls and criticism of manifesto pledges.

The prime minister is expected to say she is “100% committed to the cause” while suggesting Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is “uncertain or unsure” when it comes to delivering on Brexit.

She is expected to bemoan “warnings” from Labour, Plaid Cymru and the Liberal Democrats in Wales during last year’s EU referendum, despite her support for the UK Government’s Remain campaign – dubbed “Project Fear” by some Leave backers.

social care funding, which would see thousands of older people pay the cost of being looked after in their own homes for the first time.

Labour also narrowed the gap in polls released over the weekend although the Tories still enjoyed an advantage, with Mrs May now looking to shift the focus on to the EU as part of an attempt to attract support from those who previously voted Ukip.

Mrs May is expected to say: “The UK’s seat at the negotiating table will be filled by me or Jeremy Corbyn.

“There will be no time to waste and no time for a new government to find its way. So the stakes in this election are high.”

She will claim the UK will have a “weak hand” should Mr Corbyn secure power with the help of the Lib Dems, Plaid Cymru and the SNP as these parties “don’t want Brexit to succeed”.
