Action needed to improve reading
SIR, – Some years ago a study, in Clackmannanshire, of synthetic phonics in teaching reading gave impressive results and might have been the template to transform our reading methods. Phonics is, however, only one of a range of methods used.
With Scotland’s international rating in reading plummeting from sixth to 23rd, this strategy is failing and is unsurprising given that those other methods often rely on discredited 1970s research.
In her recent submission to Holyrood’s petitions committee, reading expert, Anne Glennie, argues that methods used should be validated by current research only and that synthetic phonics should become an integral part of the Scottish curriculum.
That Ms Glennie needed to resort to this route suggests complacency whereas urgent action is needed.
