When drink’s in, wit’s out

They say you should never mix alcohol with sport, religion or politics – as Lee Clarke and Alistair Wilson discovered to their cost in a row over whether or not tennis star Andy Murray was British or Scottish.

It turned into a fight and ended with Clarke biting off part of Mr Wilson’s ear.

Clarke escaped jail in Inverness yesterday and was given community service with a fine. How many times have we seen this type of thing?

People lose all sense of proportion when fuelled with alcohol, while pride and prejudice, which are often ugly bedfellows, make it a toxic cocktail.

It was a salutary lesson for these two, but many others have still to learn it.
