Manager Weir up for derby day with Blue Toon

The Press and Journal (Inverness) - - SPORT -

Elgin City manager Jim Weir believes today’s Betfred Cup match against Peterhead is the perfect opportunity for the Black and Whites to test themselves against a League 2 title rival.

City are unable to qualify for the second round of the competition having lost all three Group B fixtures and Weir is already preparing for the start of the league campaign next Saturday.

He said: “We knew the cup was always going to be difficult with the draw. We had the two strongest teams, Dunfermline and Hearts, up first but I thought we played a lot bet- ter in our 3-2 loss against East Fife on Tuesday.

“This will be a derby match against a team in our own league, It will be a new test for us and a measure of where we are.

“Peterhead start as one of the favourites in this league, given the players they have got. I have worked with Rory McAllister before at Brechin City and in him they have a forward who is well capable of scoring 30 goals in this league.

“Peterhead have a chance to qualify, so we will be up against it but our home form has been reasonably good and it would be nice to get something on board before the league starts.”

City defender Darryl McHardy is suspended.

“It will be a new test for us and a measure of where we are”
