Village shock over attack

Police: Officers scour quiet community for knife-wielding mugger

The Press and Journal (Moray) - - NEWS MORAY - BY NICK HUMPHRIES

A quiet north-east community was in “shock” yesterday after a takeaway boss was confronted by a knifewielding would-be robber.

Mo Rahman, boss of Cafe Mint on Commerce Street, Insch, said the culprit pulled out a “big knife” and demanded he hand over his watch and jewellery.

Mr Rahman managed to shrug him off during the incident on Thursday night, but the man remained at large last night.

Officers swooped on the normally quiet village in their numbers and led a search by torchlight through the trees for the wanted man, and also checked properties to try to find him.

Police said they were searching for a man who is 6ft tall with dark hair and who was wearing a cap.

Detective Sergeant John Lumsden said: “This ap- pears to have been an isolated incident and officers are following a positive line of inquiry.

“Although he wasn’t injured it has naturally been upsetting for the man involved. Officers would ask that anyone with information contacts them on 101 or Crimetsoppers on 0800 555111 to remain anonymous.”

Mary Barnes, from Victoria Street, Insch, said: “It’s shocking to think something like that would happen here. Hopefully the police catch the guy. It’s really nasty.

“We don’t want our businesses to be targeted in the future.”

Derek McLintock, of George Street, added: “It’s normally so quiet here. I’m sure someone will have seen something to help the police get the guy. Fair play to Mo for sticking up for himself.”

Councillor Victoria Harper was relieved that Mr Rahman survived the ordeal unhurt.

She said: “I’m very relieved because it could have been much worse. Everyone is eager for the culprit to be apprehended.”

Mr Rahman described the man as having an Essex accent, and said: “I could see the man coming down the road ahead of me, and then go into a lane beside the Commercial Hotel.

“The next thing I knew, he was coming up to me and saying ‘Give me your watch and jewellery’.

“At that point, he pulled out a big knife but I grabbed him by the hand and asked what he was doing.”

“At that point, he pulled out a big knife but I grabbed him”
