In­crease in sup­ply will add to glut

SIR, – It’s right to wel­come Sta­toil’s find as “proof there is still life in the North Sea” (Press and Jour­nal Oc­to­ber 10). How­ever, doesn’t it show the in­ad­e­quacy of free mar­ket eco­nomics in get­ting a co­her­ent en­ergy pol­icy?

Un­less politi­cians put oil first then any in­crease in sup­ply will add to the global glut. Per­haps the Scot­tish Govern­ment’s ban on frack­ing will be­come per­ma­nent to boost the North Sea. What is the pol­icy for do­mes­tic heat­ing and cook­ing given the Good House Keep­ing In­sti­tute’s ad­vice?
