’m not one for mak­ing New Year res­o­lu­tions but I’m al­ways on the look­out for new wines and at tast­ings al­ways make a bee­line for the un­usual grapes and less known re­gions. It’s easy to reach for the old favourites when you wine shop but ex­plo­ration is fun, and do make the most of your lo­cal in­de­pen­dent wine shop and high-street chains – like me these guys love to chat wine. So here are some of my re­cent dis­cov­er­ies … It’s good to see the Al­barino grape is fea­tur­ing more reg­u­larly on shelves and wine lists. Mostly it’s from its At­lantic in­flu­enced Rias Baixas home­land in the north-west of Spain and is rarely seen out­side of that area, but I tried these two ex­am­ples re­cently that I’d be very happy to add to my wine rack. Gar­zon Al­barino 2015 is from Uruguay and the vine­yards are just 11 miles from the At­lantic Ocean which pro­vides a mod­er­at­ing in­flu­ence. It has a lovely tex­ture
