Light festival shines with success

The Press and Journal (North-East) - - LOCAL NEWS -

A light festival in Aberdeen has been crowned a shining success after scooping two top awards at a national ceremony.

Spectra 2017 won large event of the year and team of the year at The Drum Scottish Event Awards in Glasgow.

Local and international artists descend on the city centre each February to create spectacular light installations.

The 2017 festival highlights included an interactive sculpture featuring 6,000 incandescent light bulbs by two Canadian artists and a light installation filling St Nicholas Kirkyard with stick figure spiders which came to life with a spooky musical score.

Last year the event won the overall festival of the year prize.

Councillor Marie Boulton, Aberdeen City Council’s culture spokeswoman, said: “To win this award against such strong competition is an incredible example of how our staff, volunteers and our arts partner curated place work together in delivering such a unique festival for the people of Aberdeen and beyond.

“I would like to congratulate the teams responsible.”
