Craigellachie link to Canada railway
SIR, – With regard to the recent correspondence on Craigellachie in Canada, may I add some further information?
The two gentlemen mentioned, George Stephen, of Dufftown and Donald Smith, of Forres, the founding fathers of the Canadian Pacific Railway, were in fact cousins and very proud members of Clan Grant.
It is widely held that they named the meeting place of the East and West Lines as Craigellachie from the Clan Grant motto “Stand Fast
– Craigellachie!” The alternative theory is that Craigellachie in Scotland was approximately halfway between their birth places. Either way, this proved their love for their home country.
