Whether it being buried alive by a wartime tunnel collapse or beaten to within a inch of his life by Father Hughes’ hired muscle, Tommy Shelby has found himself in plenty of tight spots. However, the Birmingham crime boss might just have bitten off more than he can chew as Steven Knight’s acclaimed saga returns for a fourth series. It begins as the gangster receives a mysterious letter on Christmas Eve, 1925, and realises that his loved-ones are in danger of annihilation. As the enemy closes in, Tommy flees his country house and returns to the only safe place he knows: Small Heath, the slum where he grew up.
