Cause of blaze still under investigation

Firefighters were called out to deal with a blaze on a fishing boat docked at a north-east harbour yesterday.

The Enterprise II was moored at Macduff Harbour when the fire began to take hold.

Crews from Macduff, Banff, Portsoy and Turriff rushed out to extinguish the flames after the harbour master raised the alarm at 7.35am.

The blaze was brought under control over an hour later.

No one was injured in the incident and the cause of the fire is currently not known.

Owner James Lovie said: “It’s all under control and there’s no one hurt.”

Passer-by David Imray witnessed the early stages of the blaze.

He said: “It looked like there was a fire in the deck space at the bow of the boat.

“There were three fishermen at the scene, one ran back to unplug the electric box and they were running around quite panicked.

“It was a decent-sized fire so it will have done a lot of damage I think.

“The fire engine and crew were there on the scene very quickly.

“I think it was an electrical fault fire.

“I only caught the first few minutes but the crew were running back and forth to the electric box before the fire engine turned up at 7.40am.”

Troup councillor Mark Findlater said it was lucky no one was injured during the incident.

He said: “Praise has to be given to the harbour master for alerting the emergency services and to the fire crews for responding so promptly.

“Fires at vessels can be a serious matter due to the fuel and other goods on board so it’s good this fire was contained quickly.

“Thankfully the boat was in the harbour and it could be dealt with safely.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said crews were alerted at 7.35am and made their way to the scene.

They were engaged for over an hour.

She said: “We had four appliances at the scene and the height vehicle.

“We got the stop call at 8.39am when the fire had been extinguished.”

“There were three fishermen running around quite panicked”
