Aznavour had to bed hop for Ian

THE death of legendary French crooner Charles Aznavour has brought back memories of the time he lost a furious tug of war for his favourite suite at the Meridien Hotel during the annual invasion of Paris by hundreds of English racing fans on Arc weekend.

Aznavour, above, wanted to stay an extra night in his suite which had been booked months in advance as normal for Arc weekend by Ian Fry, the genial boss of Horse Racing Abroad, who were responsible for bringing legions of punters to Paris by sea and air.

At first the singer refused to move, but he changed his mind after fielding dozens of calls for Fry who used the suite as his command post for his busiest weekend of the year.
