Counting the cost of Aussie challenge
THE eye-watering cost of sending raiders from England to Australia has not deterred several of our trainers again mounting a serious challenge on the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday.
While horses from Ireland and France have triumphed in the race that is said to stop the nation, runners from England have come up just short time and again.
Owners and trainers of European challengers are encouraged by the lavish prize money on offer down to tenth place in the Melbourne Cup.
But Withhold, trained by Roger Charlton and Duretto, trained by Andrew Balding, are already out of the race following setbacks after flying to Australia.
The bill for both is likely to be well over £60,000 by the time they return home.
