Canada land historic first title as England claim the bronze

- NICK VERDIER

CANADA won their firstever World Series tournament in Singapore last Sunday as England secured the bronze medal.

Simon Amor’s side fell to the surprising Canadians 17-5 in the semi-finals but a 14-12 win over Australia, thanks to tries from Callum Sirker and Harry Glover, ensured a podium finish for a youthful side.

“Our decision making wasn’t good enough and that is something we need to address going forwards,” said Amor.

“However to get on the podium with the number of injuries we have is pleasing. To see the young guys go so well is exciting when looking to the future.”

The quarter-finals kicked off with Fiji, South Africa and New Zealand all falling but the Blitzbokke got their act together in their next outing to beat Fiji 19-14 and all but secure the overall title with two tournaments remaining.

It was a North American final with Canada taking on Mike Friday’s USA and the Canadians raced to a 19-0 lead scoring three quick tries. The USA hit back with three of their own to level but a late effort from Lucas Hammond sealed an historic win.

Wales failed to get out of their group but ended the tournament lifting the Challenge Trophy on the back of a 24-12 win over Scotland.

They trailed 12-5 at the break but tries from Luke Morgan, Owen Lane and Luke Treharne, added on Billy McBryde’s first half effort, saw them home.
