HARLEQUINS boss John Kingston said defeat felt like a win given that it ensured European Champions rugby next season.

“It’s an odd feeling when you have lost the game but got what you want – but I am very proud. We showed huge resolve and given the way we played over the last few weeks I think we have deserved it.

“We probably feel as excited as if we had won a Cup, particularly in our 150th anniversary. Lots of obstacles have been thrown at this group, it’s been a challenge.”

Northampton coach Jim Mallinder meanwhile issued a very firm “hands off ” message after reports in France this week suggested that No.8 Louis Picamoles could be tempted back to France after just one year in England.

“Louis has been a magnificent player for us, he’s signed a threeyear contract, he’s in the first year with us and there is no get-out clause. He’s happy here and we don’t see Louis going anywhere.”
