Sorry Gloucester but I had to put family first - Fearns

- ■ By NEALE HARVEY

CONTRACT renegade Carl Fearns says securing his family’s future outweighed all other considerations once it became apparent that Top 14 outfit Lyon were willing to break the bank to retain his services.

Powerful No.8 Fearns, 28, had eyes on a future with England when he signed for Gloucester last November – a deal reputed to be worth £320,000-a-year.

However, Fearns reneged on his Kingsholm contract after being offered at least double that amount by Lyon, forcing Gloucester to forego the arrival of their prospective star signing in return for “significant compensation”.

Gloucester supporters are furious, but speaking exclusively to The Rugby

Paper, Fearns, below, said: “I can understand why Gloucester are unhappy, but I’ve got to look after my family and think of life after rugby.

“I did the contract early and had every intention of coming back and trying to play for England, but as time went by I realised there were a lot of other factors to consider.

“It would have been a bit easier had Lyon come to the table earlier because the situation is not great, but it was a good offer from Lyon and everything’s black and white rather than uncertainties over England appearances and the like.”

Fearns added: “When I left Bath two years ago I wasn’t happy there, but I’m really happy at Lyon and my family are, too. I’ve got three kids who are four, three and eight months, my wife loves it and it’s a really good life experience for us. “It’s a fabulous situation and as time went on it started sinking in. I would have been leaving Lyon for only one reason, which was to try and play for England, and I realised that that wasn’t everything. “I love what England are doing under Eddie Jones and I had chats with Paul Gustard about what I needed to do. I’m playing against world-class back rowers and was one of the best No.8s here last season so I don’t think there’s any doubt I’m international quality, but going back there were no guarantees.

“I could have been injured or my form might not have been as good, so if I hadn’t done what I’ve done for my family it wouldn’t have rested well with me. I’ve got a threeyear deal and I may look to stay longer.”

Lyon finished last season just seven points outside the play-offs and have serious ambitions of making the top six next season.

Fearns added: “We did more than just stay up and beat a lot of top sides, so it was a good season that gave us a lot of encouragement.

“Lyon’s an ambitious club – we’ve recruited well and got a new stadium – so the top six and the playoffs will definitely be our aim.”
