So ruthless Rams earn sixth win on the trot
Redingensians.. 21pts Redruth .................. 12pts
ON a brisk November afternoon at Old Bath Road Redingensians strung together their sixth victory in a row against Redruth.
Before the game Redruth sat only one place and three points below them in the table but came up against a Redruth side that had been a regular in the top five in the league.
Two tries late in the first half for the Reading men ultimately gave them the edge in what was to be a tense and hard fought match.
This sentiment was echoed by the Rams head coach, Seb Reynolds: “I was really impressed by the way the boys built pressure in the first half.
“Redruth are a good side and we knew they would look dangerous at some point.
“I was really impressed by the way the players kept composure for another good win.”
The Reading men seemed especially focused as they started brightly with the pack resuming normal order with a formidable 25-yard drive after six minutes.
The ball broke to Tom Humberstone who showed quick hands to pop the ball off to Jordan Souter who burst through and over the try line, only to be pulled back controversially by the referee Richard Haughton for a forward pass.
The Rams dominated possession throughout the first half but seemed as if they would be left with nothing to show for it.
This was until, after 30 minutes, the Rams greeted Redruth with a flurry of attacks, which was eventually rewarded as man of the match Conor Corrigan burst through.
He ran an exquisite line to take the ball over the line directly under the posts, setting up Humberstone
for an easy conversion and putting the first points of the afternoon on the board.
The Rams followed this up minutes later with their seventh penalty try of the season. Following a commanding drive from the Rams pack, which took them from outside the oppositions 22 all the way to the try line, as they went into half-time with a commanding 14-0 lead.
The away team’s afternoon was not made any better early in the second half as their captain Richard Brown received a yellow card.
The Rams took immediate advantage of their extra man with an efficacious drive, which resulted in them being awarded their second penalty try of the afternoon and their eighth of the season.
Penalty tries are beginning to come into serious contention for the position of Redingensians’ top scorer.
Redruth replied with two second half tries from AJ Cant and Shaun Buzza as they attempted to drag themselves back into the game.
Ultimately though, the tries were nothing more than a consolation and the Rams lead was unattainable as they saw the game out with a minimum of fuss.
