Pivac fumes as Scarlets faulter in the final quarter
SCARLETS head coach Wayne Pivac was not a happy man after his side threw away their lead against Edinburgh on Friday night.
The Welsh side led 21-17 after 49 minutes but they let Edinburgh back in with No.8 Viliame Mata and wing Tom Brown both scoring try-doubles.
“We should have kicked on when we went ahead,” Pivac said. “Instead we let Edinburgh score a try when they had 14 men and then made silly errors with ball in hand for the rest of the match.”
Opposite number Richard Cockerill, missing 22 of his squad through injury or Scotland duty, said: “Given the players we were missing I am proud of the team’s efforts to get this win.”
Edinburgh took the lead when Fijian Mata powered over in the eighth minute. Simon Hickey converted.
Dan Evans missed a penalty for Scarlets and on 12 minutes there was a long stoppage when Scarlets back row Blade Thomson was knocked out when his head connected with an opponent’s knee.
When play resumed it was his team who levelled things up. A nice move saw winger Morgan Williams go in on the left and Evans nailed the conversion to make it 7-7.
Warriors regained the lead 10 minutes later, Mata going close again before wing Tom Brown straightened up and made it over the try line.
Hickey missed the conversion, but six minutes later a floated pass by Edinburgh skipper Henry Pyrgos saw Brown in for his second try.
Scarlets closed the gap to three points at the break, centre Paul Asquith latching onto a neat Jones kick to score.
Scarlets s grew in confidence and with Edinburgh on the back foot, Hickey was yellow carded for not releasing in the tackle.
Scarlets took advantage with full-back Johnny McNicholl going over for a converted try in the 49th minute.
But Edinburgh dug in and managed to score the bonus point try when still down to 14 men, loosehead prop Pierre Schoeman going over with Juan Pablo Socino converting for 24-21.
Scarlets prop Simon Gardiner was yellow carded for a repeat team offences and Mata’s second try made the win safe.
