On January 15 2015, Roland Duce, of Benchmark Properties, gave a remarkable speech at Tricolos restaurant in Scarborough, in which he acknowledged his own frustration at the delays in developing North Bay – but gave his personal assurance that the new waterpark would be built. It was a turning point in which the credibility of the scheme went beyond doubt (and he was very complimentary about this newspaper). Years before, we had published a front page article in which we urged councillors ahead of the council’s all-day planning committee on February 23 2006 not to drop the ball. Some councillors were not as keen as others on the plan. We said that almost anything attracts contrary voices but that an all-year round facility had to win the vote . The town is finally on the verge of witnessing the opening of the Alpamare attraction, a major leap forward, and who can now recall the names of the siren voices.
