Secretary of State for Education Justine Greening visited Scalby School as part of a two-day tour of provision for young people in Scarborough. Staff and students were delighted to have the opportunity to talk to her. Scalby’s Student Voice team were on hand to greet her on arrival.

The Secretary of State met with headteacher David Read and deputy headteacher Michael McCluskie to find out more about the coastal area and their views on how provi- sion could be improved.

She had a tour of the school visiting a range of different subjects and ages such as year 10 maths, year nine food technology, year eight French and year 11 English. She then had lunch in the Learning Resource Centre with a group of local headteachers to hear their views on how to develop education in the area further.

Mr Read said: “It was a privilege for Scalby School to be visited by the Secretary of State, Justine Greening. I found her personable, very well-informed, yet also willing to listen to the views of others.

“She is clearly passionate about education, driving social change and the extra funding the government is to invest in our area will undoubtedly increase opportunities for our young people.”
