The day his grandfathe­r died, Steve Westaby vowed to become a heart surgeon. Today, as one of the world’s most eminent heart surgeons, Dr Steve Westaby shares the stories of the lives he has fought to save.

Steve Westaby is a world famous heart surgeon who is renowned for being the first in history to fit a patient with a new type of artificial heart. During his 35 year career he has worked at several of the UK’s top hospitals and performed more than 11,000 heart operations.

He won the Ray C Fish Award for Scientific Achievemen­t in 2004.

He is presently a heart surgeon at the paediatric cardiac unit at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

Fragile Lives is his is his first book. An amazing insight into the life of a modern day hero.

Books by the Beach runs at various venues in Scarboroug­h from Wednesday April 26 to Monday May 1.

Guests include actresses Denise Welch and Dame Harariet Walter.

TV reality star teams up with writer Adele Parks for an event at Scarboroug­h Libruary.

Former MP Alan Johnson will talk about the latest in his autobiogra­phical series and best-selling author Salley Vickers hosts a literary lunch.
