Sad need to clear rubbish: join us

The Scarborough Evening News - - THE VOICE OF SCARBOROUGH -

Thank you to Councillor Bill Chatt, Steven the Seagull and the Scarborough News for highlighting the problem of litter on the beach.

I have been part of a band of volunteers who have cleaned the beach every evening of the summer holidays (this is our second year). We are proud of what we have done, as well as desperately saddened that the need is there. If anyone would like to join us next year, please contact me on 07748163838.

More has to be done. Better signage would be good and how about some funky bins which make funny noises when ‘fed’ to attract kids?

We also need to reduce the amount of packaging. Could the traders stop selling plastic buckets in nets which only end up abandoned on the sand?

And could we have a deposit system for returned re-usable plastic buckets and for plastic bottles?

The problem of litter takes an all-round vision which goes beyond punitive fines.

Thank you to everyone who does not drop litter and to those who volunteer their time with various organisations in our town to clean up after those who do. Kate Evans Royal Avenue, Scarborough
