Beauty of the town is being sliced away

The Scarborough News - - THE VOICE OF SCARBOROUGH -

Re the Futurist:

We have just returned from a few days in Harrogate where they have managed to retain much of the elegance and splendour of the lovely town.

We visited the Royal Hall on three occasions to two shows and a conducted tour of the once condemned theatre for which a voluntary contribution of £3 was requested and to which 40 people attended.

This theatre has been fabulously renovated over six years from fundraising, lottery grants and donations from various well wishers.

It is now superb. Much of the front of house staff are volunteers and do their job with a welcoming and proud attitude making a visit a very pleasurable experience.

We met several Harrogate residents about the town and when we said we were from Scarborough their immediate reaction was “What are they doing to the Futurist?”

Come on Scarborough. Please retain at least some of our once beautiful town. It can be done. It just needs the commitment.

We can always go to Flamingo Land or Blackpool if we want that kind of entertainment.

Bridlington renovated their theatre to a great standard years ago and now all the big names in show business go there. Scarborough Council ... listen to people.

Let’s not forget the Arcadia Theatre on this site too!
