Talk to us about virus and your other fears, say local Samaritans
Volunteers in Scarborough are urging people to get in touch with their coronavirus fears and other worries.
Samaritans of Scarborough has launched Talk to Us – a campaign highlighting the round-the-clock emotional support services it offers – in the wake of a rise in calls since the pandemic started.
Since lockdown began in March, Samaritans volunteers suggest that one in three callers talk about coronavirus.
They say many people have been feeling more anxious and distressed than before the pandemic.
Volunteer surveys, which gathered over 3,000 responses, found the most common concerns relating to coronavirus are around loneliness, isolation, mental health and illness, family, finances and unemployment.
Samaritans of Scarborough says its team have continued providing emotional support throughout the pandemic at a time when listening to others has never been more important.
Branch Director Libby Gilbert said: “Our volunteers have been working day and night to be there for anyone who is struggling in these uncertain and challenging times.
“Lockdown restrictions have had a huge impact on everyday life for many people, and our volunteers have been a much-needed source of support for those whose networks haven’t been available during the pandemic.”
Samaritans of Scarborough is encouraging the local community to show its support by offering a donation or having a look around the branch’s shop in Hanover Road, which has recently been updated.
