Hero And Villain

The Scots Magazine - - Mailbox -

Kenny Macaskill’s article on Peterhead Prison mentioned Johnny Ramensky, the criminal and war hero. Ramensky developed great skills as a very acrobatic cat burglar and expert safe blower. The law eventually caught up with him and he was sent to prison, but because of his talents he was recruited into the Commandos where his exploits behind enemy lines opening German safes earned him a military medal. He was officially pardoned but returned to crime, eventually dying in Perth Prison at 67. He earned the respect of both police and public, for his personal policy of only robbing business premises and never resorting to violence.
