Verdant Works

The Scots Magazine - - Focus On… Dundee -

THE only dedicated jute museum in the UK tells the story of Dundee’s textile industry. The oldest part of the works is High Mill, a three-storey building transformed from a derelict shell into a stunning example of Victorian architecture that is now a bright and open space catering for exhibitions and corporate events. But the essence of Verdant Works is the chance to transport yourself back in time to the days when the jute industry was booming. The 19th century cobbled courtyard does that in an instance, but the sights and sounds of a Victorian mill give extra authenticity. You’ll learn how jute was harvested in India and came to Dundee to be made into sacks, carpet-backing, twine and matting. Verdant Works is only 10 minutes’ walk from Discovery Point.
